Mike Hammer, the head of the United States diplomatic mission in Cuba, recently traveled with his family to Varadero, only to encounter what he describes as another staged incident by the Cuban regime. "As I continue to explore Cuba, this time in Varadero, I'm eager to meet everyday Cubans; however, much like the ubiquitous Ladas, Russians seem to be everywhere," Hammer quipped in a video shared on the diplomatic mission's Facebook page.
Hammer reported a new alleged attempt by the Cuban authorities to orchestrate a scene. "Interestingly, during my visit, an older couple approached to criticize U.S. policies, which is their right, of course. Curiously, someone immediately began filming the interaction. So, perhaps it was staged. You might know better than I do," he remarked.
In recent weeks, Hammer has visited several locations across the island, including Bejucal, Artemisa, and San Antonio de los Baños, known as the birthplace of the July 11 protests. During these visits, he has engaged with seniors in church-run homes, volunteers providing food to those in need, and youth in Catholic churches.
A Persistent Diplomatic Presence
The U.S. official has faced numerous accusations from the Cuban government for meeting with Cuban families, activists, and opposition figures throughout the country. Cuba's Deputy Foreign Minister, Carlos Fernández de Cossío, has labeled Hammer's actions as "interfering behavior" and even suggested declaring him persona non grata.
In an interview with EFE, Fernández de Cossío criticized Hammer's role, accusing him of seeking media attention and acting as a "scarecrow" to "drive people away." Despite these threats, Hammer continues his visits, asserting his right to maintain direct contact with Cuban citizens and promote democratic, religious, and humanitarian values.
Support from Washington
"These engaging and valuable encounters underscore the importance I place on connecting directly with people," Hammer stated on one occasion. The U.S. Department of State in Washington strongly supports his efforts on the island, dismissing the Cuban government's accusations as attempts to stifle efforts to shed light on the country's reality.
