Outrage Erupts on Social Media Over Video of Cuban Welfare Lunch

Sunday, June 29, 2025 by Daniel Colon

A video revealing the contents of a lunch provided to welfare recipients in Cuba has sparked outrage across social media platforms. Activist Idelisa Diasniurka Salcedo Verdecia shared the video, though she did not specify the location on the island where it was recorded. In the footage, several individuals can be heard as they display containers filled with a watery broth and some noodles.

“This is a disgrace—the lunch for welfare recipients in Cuba,” lamented Salcedo. The video has evoked a strong reaction from online users who express their distress over the struggles faced by the island's most vulnerable populations.

“People might think it's a lie, but this is the harsh reality," commented user Noly Calveira. "When it's not rice, it's pea water. Those of us with chronic illnesses in Cuba have no hope for a proper diet unless we seek it ourselves. The saddest part is the situation for the elderly.”

Another user, Melvis Gutiérrez, remarked, “Not even a dog would eat this. I can't understand how they can give this to the elderly, my God.”

Elderly Cubans Struggle Amid Economic Crisis

This issue is not new in a nation where the ongoing crisis particularly impacts the elderly, who, with their meager pensions, cannot keep up with the soaring cost of living. Prices continue to rise amid a severe shortage of basic goods.

Last year, residents from the Santiago municipality of San Luis reported missing essential items at La Cuevita care center, where meals for welfare recipients are prepared. “Some days we only have soup and sweet potatoes,” warned an elderly man to local channel Tele Turquino.

“Soup without noodles—our soup hasn't had noodles since January, and we only receive a small side because the manager makes his own arrangements,” explained another welfare recipient.

The man further detailed his lack of understanding regarding the product shortages, stating, “We do not meet with the manager, nor are we given any information.”
