Friday, June 27, 2025 by Bella Nunez

Cuban actor Alejandro Cuervo recently discussed his acting career and entrepreneurial endeavors in Cuba during an interview on the program Destino Tolk. This subject has sparked considerable debate among the Cuban public. During the conversation, one of the hosts, Fernan, posed a direct question: "Is it possible to get ahead in Cuba? Can one prosper there?" Cuervo responded candidly, saying, "It's very difficult, but it can be done."

The actor elaborated that the struggle to succeed is not unique to Cubans. "It's tough in Cuba, it's tough in Spain where I've been, it's tough in Italy where I've been, it's tough in Mexico, it's tough in Cancún, it's tough in Panama," he shared, noting that he has friends in all these countries, "and many were actually doing better in Cuba than they are now."

Cuervo addressed the severe situation on the island, saying, "Cuba is going through a terrible time. Outside of Havana, there's no electricity. My family lives in the countryside, and I suffer from this daily, along with all Cubans." He believes that the current energy crisis is even worse than during the so-called Special Period of the 1990s: "I remember the Special Period as a child, and I think what’s happening now with the energy situation in Cuba is worse."

Strategies for Economic Progress

Despite these challenges, Alejandro advocates that with determination and discipline, progress is possible. He emphasizes the importance of saving money and then investing it wisely. According to him, many Cubans squander their money instead of planning for the future: "Humans tend to think that when we have a good financial moment, it will last forever."

Cuervo credits his ability to build his house in Havana to his savings, saying he managed to "get by," as they say in Cuba. "The government hasn’t helped me; it’s the people who have," he shared, highlighting that his popularity has opened many doors. "People like me, and I’ve earned their affection gradually through my attitude and work," he stated.

The Role of Social Media

Alejandro also emphasized the importance of social media in allowing the public to connect more closely with artists: "In this era of social media, the public has the chance to learn more about their favorite artists."

Cuervo recounted years of tireless work in nightclubs, where he earned significantly more than as an actor, with the ultimate goal of financial growth, sometimes at the expense of basic needs.

The actor addressed ongoing rumors about his alleged ties to the Cuban regime, clarifying that his achievements are the result of his own hard work and sacrifice. His statements have once again stirred criticism among Cubans, whose realities on the island often starkly contrast with his personal experiences.

The interview with Destino Tolk comes amidst growing controversy following Cuervo's trip to the United States, which has elicited mixed reactions among the Cuban exile community in Miami.
