First Impressions: A Cuban Woman's Eye-Opening Visit to a U.S. Mall

Sunday, June 29, 2025 by Amelia Soto

A Cuban woman living in the United States recently took to TikTok to share her experience of visiting a mall for the first time in the country. Having spent two years residing in a rural area, she humorously noted that the only nearby spot for shopping or socializing was a Walmart.

In a video posted on the account @el.hogar.de.paulette, she candidly admitted, “Yes, my love, I've been in this country for two years and never went to a mall.” Her daily life unfolds in the countryside, where she describes the local Walmart as the hub for encountering neighbors and her child's teachers. “There's nothing else to do,” she laughed.

Determined to experience something new, she embarked on a long journey, traveling 469 miles with her husband and son to visit the nearest shopping center. Once there, she explored several stores, amazed by the variety of products and the city's pace. However, by the end of the day, she arrived at an unexpected conclusion.

“Civilization is beautiful, but with traffic like that, I'll think twice before leaving the countryside again,” she remarked honestly. Despite the initial thrill, she admitted feeling happier strolling through the familiar aisles of Walmart than dealing with the urban hustle.

Her experience struck a chord with many TikTok users, particularly other immigrants living in rural parts of the United States. The video quickly went viral, celebrated for its authenticity and the stark contrast it portrayed between urban life and rural serenity.
