Gerardo Hernández Spreads Misinformation About Cuban Deportation in the U.S.

Friday, June 27, 2025 by Daniel Vasquez

Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, a former Cuban spy and now head of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, has stirred controversy on social media with a recent post spreading false information. His actions have sparked outrage among journalists, artists, and online users alike.

In a post on his X account, Hernández wrote, "She sang during Donald Trump's campaign, and now..." The message was accompanied by a misleading montage of two unrelated events. The first part of the video featured the group "Los 3 de La Habana" performing their well-known song in support of Donald Trump. This was followed by footage of a young Cuban woman, Janet Correa, weeping inconsolably after her husband's detention by ICE agents in Miami.

Hernández's post falsely claimed, without any evidence or verification, that "the Cuban singer Janet Correa, who supported Donald Trump's campaign, had her husband deported yesterday, and this was her reaction." However, this assertion is completely untrue. The woman crying in the video is not Ana Páez, the singer from the pro-Trump group, but actually Janet Correa, a legal resident of the United States whose husband was arrested in May.

The confusion seems to have originated from a post by the user "SVCNoticias," which irresponsibly combined images without confirming the identities of those involved. Not only did Hernández propagate this falsehood, but he also added a mocking tone, suggesting that the deportation was some form of retribution for supporting the former U.S. president.

Journalist Mario J. Pentón was among the first to debunk the misinformation. "The spy Gerardo Hernández, head of the Cuban dictatorship's surveillance committees, shares a fake news story claiming the deportation of the singer from Los Tres de La Habana's husband," said singer Ana María Páez in a brief phone conversation. "They have nothing else to invent. The Cuban regime is desperate."

Filmmaker Ian Padrón also responded sharply, writing, "Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, stop being so deceitful and at least do a minimal search: The amazing Cuban singer Ana Páez (Los 3 de La Habana) is the one singing that song, and she's happily in Miami."

The manipulation is even more egregious because it exploits the genuine pain of Janet Correa, whose heartbreak moved many when her partner was detained during an immigration appointment. "This is an injustice, a great injustice," Correa cried out in that moment. Her husband, who has no criminal record and has been a diligent worker since arriving in the U.S., was arrested after a judge denied his case. His lawyer criticized ICE's swift action in executing the arrest order and announced legal steps to halt the deportation.

The unauthorized and inaccurate use of Correa's image further tarnishes Hernández Nordelo's record of propaganda, showing his disregard for fact-checking when it suits his ideological narrative. While Los 3 de La Habana continue to thrive and enjoy life in Miami, serving as a musical symbol for a segment of the conservative Cuban exile community, Hernández stands exposed as a purveyor of misinformation, wielding deceit as a political tool.
