Nearly five years after a tragic crash claimed the life of a woman in Miami Gardens, authorities have arrested Malcolm Antonio Lumpkin, charging him with vehicular manslaughter. At the time of the incident, Lumpkin was 19 years old when he collided head-on with 49-year-old Renee Symonette's vehicle on the night of October 7, 2020.

According to Miami Gardens Police Department, the collision occurred as Symonette attempted a left turn at the intersection of Northwest 179th Street and 37th Avenue. Lumpkin was driving a 2016 Nissan Maxima when he struck her car.

The arrest warrant, which was issued in March, alleges that Lumpkin was recklessly driving nearly 90 miles per hour in a zone with a 35 mph speed limit. He ran a red light at Northwest 183rd Street, weaved through two cars at high speed, and continued his erratic lane changes until he collided with Symonette's Mercedes-Benz.

The crash was fatal for Symonette, who died on the scene, while her passenger sustained injuries. Vehicle data revealed Lumpkin was traveling at 91 mph just a second before impact, and only slightly braked half a second before the final collision occurred at 89 mph. After the crash, Lumpkin abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.

Now 24, Lumpkin faces charges of reckless vehicular manslaughter. According to a Local 10 report, this is not his first brush with the law involving a fatality. In 2015, at just 14 years old, he was arrested in connection with the alleged manslaughter of 15-year-old Jakyri Fleurimar during a shooting at a home in northwest Miami-Dade County. However, the outcome of that juvenile case remains unclear.

Lumpkin's recent arrest took place last Monday after a Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office detective identified him driving another Nissan Maxima, this time a 2019 model, with an illegally obscured license plate. When officers attempted to stop him, Lumpkin fled in the vehicle.

The chase ended a few blocks later after Lumpkin crashed and attempted to flee on foot. Authorities apprehended him shortly thereafter. Besides the vehicular manslaughter charge, Lumpkin faces charges of fleeing and eluding police and resisting arrest without violence. He is currently held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a bail set at over $250,000.
