Tuesday, June 24, 2025 by Alex Smith

In a candid and emotional interview on the podcast "Esto no es un Podcast," Cuban actress Zajaris Fernández opened up about the most heartrending moment of her life: leaving her homeland, Cuba. "Honestly, the saddest moment I've experienced was when I left Cuba," she admitted, visibly moved. "I felt sad, yes. I wanted to leave, but you want to go because you know there's a world out there beyond your imagination," she confessed.

Fernández's decision to emigrate was filled with hope, but it also carried a deep sense of uprooting that still affects her emotionally. "You think you're going to arrive somewhere and experience life differently. Because living in Cuba is living under a dictatorship. People under a dictatorship are unaware of everything, everything. So, when you're in Cuba, you think money is everywhere, like gum on the trees. That's what you believe. And then, when you arrive, you face the reality of life," she explained.

Recalling her migration at the age of 24, the actress spoke poignantly about the connections she left behind. "I wasn't a child when I left. I had a husband, I was married, I had a dog. I remember how I left her and everything. And when you think about that moment…" she trailed off, her voice filled with emotion.

Despite the harshness of the migration process, Fernández also discussed how this life change allowed her to grow: "You start to understand that when you work hard and put in the effort, you can achieve as much as you want. There are no limits. But imagine having to uproot yourself," she shared.
