A Cuban man who was on the sidewalk this past Friday when a large truck lost control in Pinar del Río, crashing into several pedestrians, recounted his harrowing experience from the incident that claimed four lives. According to a report by state journalist Alina López Ochoa, Léster Ramón Garrido sustained injuries to his hands, arms, and leg after the truck barreled towards him and others at the two-kilometer mark on the road leading to Luis Lazo.
"I was standing on the sidewalk with some friends and noticed the truck approaching dangerously. I warned everyone and ran for safety. The vehicle mowed down people on the sidewalk... I miraculously escaped," recounted Garrido, showing the wounds on his body. His motorcycle suffered extensive damage after being hit by the truck.
The images shared by the journalist also reveal the extent of the damage to the house where the truck crashed, with several columns destroyed and steps shattered in the tragic accident.
According to the local outlet Guamá, the tragic event occurred at 9:15 p.m., at the two-kilometer mark on the Luis Lazo road in Pinar del Río, when the truck's driver lost control and struck a group of people standing on the sidewalk in front of a house. Among the deceased were 9-year-old Miliany Pérez Javier and 24-year-old pregnant Anairis Sánchez Blanco, the outlet reported.
In addition, three other individuals were injured, including 10-year-old Marlenis Martínez Blanco, who was reported in serious condition. Of the other injured persons, one was critically injured and has since undergone surgery, while another was reported to be in stable condition.
The injured were taken to Abel Santamaría Cuadrado Hospital, with the child being transported to the Pepe Portilla pediatric center. The driver responsible for the accident was arrested on Saturday.
