Immigration Attorney Warns: "The Risk at the Border is Enormous Right Now"

Saturday, June 21, 2025 by Claire Jimenez

Immigration attorney Liudmila Marcelo issued a stark warning this Friday about the harsh conditions migrants are currently facing at the United States' southern border, particularly those seeking asylum.

"People at the border are being denied their right to asylum. They aren't even being granted a credible fear interview; instead, they are being forced to sign deportation papers," Marcelo stated in a public announcement.

She further explained that even cases where asylum applications have been formally submitted are being dismissed without proper review. "CBP One was an organized way to handle asylum cases at the border. People were entering under asylum provisions due to persecution, among other reasons. However, now there is no way for someone to come here to request asylum, a universal right," she added.

The jurist also mentioned that a legal suit has been filed to reinstate mechanisms that would allow refugees access to a fair process. "Currently, there is no way for a judge to hear the cases of migrants arriving at the border. Those suffering from persecution are left at the mercy of the very governments that persecute them or stranded in a third country like Mexico," she remarked.

Marcelo provided insights into the potential impacts of the legislative proposal known as the Dignity Act, spearheaded by Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar, and its implications for deportation processes and political asylum.

The attorney issued an urgent call for caution: "If you're at the border right now, the risk is enormous. Make sure you are well-informed before crossing, as you could lose your chance to seek asylum or face immediate deportation."
