U.S. Mission Chief in Cuba Visits Elderly Home in Bejucal: "Deeply Moving"

Sunday, June 22, 2025 by Joseph Morales

Mike Hammer, the head of the U.S. diplomatic mission in Cuba, paid a visit on Friday to the elderly home at the Santa Susana Convent in Bejucal. This visit is part of his ongoing efforts to connect with Cuba's most vulnerable populations. Through a social media post, Hammer described the experience as "deeply moving," and praised the nuns who manage the center for their daily dedication to providing food, companionship, and care to numerous seniors.

"Many everyday Cubans have suggested through Facebook that I meet with the elderly to better understand their situation. So, we visited the Santa Susana Convent home to see how the nuns support and feed those in need," Hammer remarked.

The visit also included a tour of the San Felipe Church, where local volunteers serve meals daily to children and the elderly. "It's truly touching to witness how the Church aids the elderly and needy amidst the country's dire circumstances. Without your help, the situation would be even worse," the diplomat added.

This visit comes just a day after the U.S. State Department firmly rejected criticisms from Cuban Deputy Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío, who accused Hammer of "interfering conduct" and hinted at the possibility of declaring him persona non grata. Washington dismissed these statements as "another baseless attack from the Cuban regime."

Diplomatic sources informed CiberCuba that "nothing terrifies the Cuban dictatorship more than genuinely free and fair elections." They also condemned the failed policies of the Cuban government, which have led to "blackouts, food shortages, and a lack of medicines and basic services."

Despite the regime's criticisms, Hammer has maintained an active schedule, visiting communities, families, dissidents, and now seniors in vulnerable conditions, aiming to strengthen ties with civil society and support humanitarian initiatives on the island. The U.S. Embassy in Havana has reiterated its commitment to the Cuban people and reaffirmed that its diplomatic efforts will continue to focus on promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms in Cuba.
