In the early hours of Friday, a Hialeah police officer and the driver of a black Cadillac were hospitalized following a severe traffic collision at a notoriously dangerous intersection near a school. The crash took place around 12:45 am at the intersection of East 4th Avenue and 18th Street, directly in front of Lincoln Martí School.

According to authorities, the Cadillac driver, who was heading west on East 18th Street, failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with a police patrol vehicle. "The Cadillac ignored the stop sign and struck our police unit," confirmed Eddie Rodríguez, spokesperson for the Hialeah Police, to Telemundo 51.

Both drivers were taken to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital with injuries. The extent of their injuries has yet to be disclosed. Images from the crash scene depicted the Cadillac SUV with a shattered windshield and deployed airbags, while the police cruiser sustained visible damage to its hood.

The collision's impact was so intense that it knocked down a fence in front of the school and a light pole, which ended up on the sidewalk. Witnesses described hearing a loud crash.

Local residents expressed little surprise at the incident. They noted that crashes at this intersection are common, often caused by excessive speeding. "This corner is dangerous. People speed around it. Measures should be taken before a more serious tragedy occurs," warned a neighbor.

This incident has reignited discussions on the urgent need to improve signage and enhance traffic control in this part of Hialeah, particularly during low-traffic hours when reckless driving tends to increase.
