A devastating fire on Wednesday afternoon left a family residing at the intersection of Crombet and 4 Oeste in Guantánamo, without a home or belongings. The blaze, which also affected at least two neighboring houses, is believed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, according to local residents.

Firefighters from the Guantánamo Fire Department, supported by two water trucks, a team from the electric company, and officers from the Revolutionary National Police, arrived promptly to extinguish the flames and secure the area.

In the wake of this tragedy, friends and neighbors have launched a solidarity campaign to support the affected family. "They lost everything. If you can help with clothing, food, household items, or money, please contact me at 56107779. I can personally pick up any donations," shared one volunteer on social media.

Additionally, a method for sending monetary aid has been set up through transfers to a card, with details shared privately for security reasons.

Increase in Fires Amid Energy Crisis

Cuba has recently been grappling with a worrying increase in residential fires, many linked to the ongoing extended power outages plaguing the island. These power cuts have forced families to resort to alternative and hazardous methods for cooking or lighting their homes, significantly elevating the risk of fires.

A notable incident occurred in October 2024 in Alamar, Havana, where an apartment caught fire after a family attempted to cook with wood due to the lack of electricity. Although there were no injuries, the event highlighted the dangers of these improvised solutions amid the energy crisis.
