Dr. Francisco Durán García, the National Director of Epidemiology at Cuba's Ministry of Public Health, has updated the public on the island's current epidemiological status. In his latest report, he confirmed the continued presence of dengue cases and identified the circulation of the oropouche virus in eight Cuban provinces. He also issued a warning to the population.
Spread of Oropouche and Dengue Viruses
"In Cuba, we are currently dealing with two circulating arboviruses: dengue and oropouche," stated Dr. Durán during his appearance on Canal Caribe. He explained that dengue is impacting three provinces, affecting four municipalities and four health areas. On the other hand, the oropouche virus has a wider spread, present in eight provinces, 12 municipalities, and 14 health areas.
Despite the significant presence of the mosquito vector, particularly in Pinar del Río and Santiago de Cuba, Dr. Durán assured the public that no severe or critical cases have been reported: "We have managed to maintain it at this level."
Other Viruses and Respiratory Illnesses
Apart from arboviruses, Dr. Durán confirmed the presence of typical respiratory viruses for this time of year, such as influenza. "Many people say, 'I had COVID and now I have a cold,' but influenza and other respiratory viruses are also circulating," he noted.
He cautioned about the seasonal increase in acute diarrheal diseases, which can be attributed to heat, poor food preservation, and refrigeration issues. "It’s not an outbreak per se; rather, it’s the season when these conditions lead to more cases," he stressed, urging the public to enhance hygienic and sanitary measures.
Progress in Polio Vaccination Campaign
During his address, Dr. Durán also reminded the public that the second phase of the oral polio vaccination campaign is underway. "The second dose is being administered to children from one month to nearly three years old, and a booster for children aged nine," he explained.
Finally, he highlighted that Cuba is observing the "Week of Action Against Mosquitoes," featuring educational activities spearheaded by health promotion centers. "Despite the challenging environmental context, efforts are being made to eliminate breeding sites with active public participation," he concluded.
