Republican Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar has once again declared that she possesses the "solution" to the ongoing immigration turmoil in the United States, emphasizing the significance of the Dignity Act, which she plans to unveil soon. "For too long, America has turned a blind eye to a broken immigration system. Border chaos. Millions living in the shadows. Enough is enough. Inaction is not an option. We've been told there are only two options: amnesty or mass deportations. I propose a third: order, law, and dignity. The solution exists. It's called the DIGNITY Act. Coming soon…," the legislator expressed on X this Tuesday.
Last week, the Cuban American congresswoman revealed that, alongside her Democratic colleague Veronica Escobar (TX-16), she is working on a bipartisan legislative initiative aimed at reforming the U.S. immigration system. The goal, as she outlined, is to "restore order to the chaos" caused by recent immigration policies and to prevent further deportations of workers who have been residents for years.
Although the congresswoman withheld specific details about the content of the proposal, she announced that it will be introduced before the month's end. The initiative will be spearheaded by a bipartisan group of legislators who are advocating for a comprehensive and realistic immigration reform.
The Dignity Act Explained
The congresswoman has been striving to push forward her legislation for some time. In late March, she announced plans to reintroduce the Dignity Act, a proposed immigration reform dating back to 2023. This initiative seeks to provide a pathway to legalization for immigrants without criminal records who have lived and worked in the United States for at least five years.
In March, Salazar shared a video on her X account, stating that she had sent a letter to the Trump administration, urging them to protect those who have been in the country for over five years, contributing to the economy without any criminal records. She highlighted individuals with American children, who have been paying taxes, working, and supporting the economy. "Do not touch them," she urged, referring to what she calls "the silent heroes doing the jobs no one else wants to do."
During her March address, Salazar also called for the protection of Cubans with I-220A, as well as Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, Haitians, and Cubans holding Temporary Protected Status (TPS). However, she did not address those who arrived through the Biden administration's now-revoked humanitarian parole program.
Salazar has repeatedly advocated for Cubans in the U.S. with I-220A, a status granted to thousands of migrants without a definitive immigration status. She has urged the government to consider these cases with more flexibility, pressing for an opportunity to regularize their status. "These Cubans have come seeking freedom and should not be sent back to the oppressive dictatorship," she stressed.
