Migrants, Including Cubans, Found Hidden in Mattress Truck in Texas

Monday, June 16, 2025 by Robert Castillo

A group of 25 migrants, consisting of several Cubans, was discovered concealed in a mattress truck in southern Texas, enduring harsh heat and no ventilation. This alarming find took place last Wednesday at a truck stop on Interstate 37 in George West, following a minor accident that aroused the suspicion of a state trooper, according to FOX 26 Houston.

The driver, identified as Silvia Patricia Santamaría, a 43-year-old Houston resident, has been arrested and is facing 25 counts of human trafficking. The migrants, which included 12 men, 12 women, and an 11-year-old child, hailed from eight different countries: Cuba, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, India, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic.

They were discovered hidden behind a stack of 30 mattresses within a cramped, stifling compartment of a 2005 International truck, which Santamaría claimed was used for transporting goods. The officer inspecting the vehicle noticed inconsistencies in the driver’s story, prompting a search of the truck. With the assistance of George West local police, the hazardous situation was uncovered.

The migrants were exposed to dangerously high temperatures, with no access to ventilation or water. Once rescued, they received immediate medical attention and were placed under the custody of the U.S. Border Patrol. This close call is a stark reminder of the perilous journeys undertaken by hundreds of migrants each year, who risk their lives to reach the United States, often falling prey to smuggling networks that exploit their desperation.

For many Cubans, such perilous journeys are seen as their only escape from the island's economic decline and lack of freedoms. Santamaría has been moved to the Live Oak County Jail, where she remains in custody. Authorities have yet to disclose whether she will face federal charges or what the immigration status of the detained individuals, including the Cubans, will ultimately be.
