On Sunday, U.S. authorities arrested Vance Boelter, the prime suspect in the killing of Minnesota Democratic Congresswoman Melissa Hortman and her husband. The tragic event unfolded on Saturday, during which State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also injured.

The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office announced on its official Facebook page that, after an exhaustive police operation, Boelter was captured near his residence in Green Isle, Sibley County, around 10 PM local time. "The murderer is now in custody," the office declared, accompanying the news with a video of the arrest and referring to Boelter as "the face of evil."

Initial investigations reveal that Boelter, 57, allegedly wore a police uniform during the attack. After committing the crime, he engaged in a shootout with law enforcement before fleeing the scene. Tragically, the congresswoman and her husband died instantly, while Hoffman and his wife were rushed to the hospital. They are both conscious and recovering after surgery, according to Mat Ollig, Hoffman's nephew, who spoke with the New York Times. "They're both awake and on the mend. It's going to be a long journey," Ollig stated.

Uncovering Motives and Further Investigation

The arrest concluded an extensive manhunt that involved various federal and state agencies. The FBI quickly released images of the suspect wearing a menacing mask, which caused public alarm throughout the United States.

David Carlson, a friend of the suspect, told the Star Tribune that Boelter was experiencing financial difficulties after leaving a security job to pursue a failed business venture in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Authorities are still probing into the motives behind the attack, with suspicions that Boelter was driven by a mix of personal vendettas and mental distress, as per sources close to the inquiry.

A Premeditated Political Assault

The FBI shared footage of Boelter wearing a latex mask, bulletproof vest, and armed, impersonating a police officer to gain entry into the victims' homes. A manifesto was found in his vehicle, listing more than 50 targets, including lawmakers, abortion rights advocates, and reproductive health clinics. Documents with the slogan “No Kings,” linked to anti-Donald Trump protests, were also discovered.

Boelter served as a private sector representative on Minnesota's governor's workforce council from 2016 to 2023, appointed by a Democratic governor. Investigators are examining whether his actions were fueled by radical ideological shifts or grievances over recent legislative decisions.

The attack is deemed a "political execution" and highlights the escalating political violence in the United States. The community has expressed grief and held tribute events, while concerns over political leaders' safety continue to grow.
