Matanzas Tire Repairman Lights Up Community with Street Charcoal Stove for Morning Coffee

Monday, June 16, 2025 by Christopher Ramirez

Amidst Cuba's ongoing energy crisis, stories of community support and innovation are surfacing, often in areas most neglected by government action. In the city of Cárdenas, Matanzas, a modest tire repairman has found a way to continue his trade during the crisis while also extending a helping hand to his neighbors.

Mercedes Luzardo, a resident, shared in the Facebook group Cardenenses about a daily scene that captures the neighborhood spirit during these challenging times. "My house is down an alley, so I can't see outside from my windows. But when I stand at the gate, I see this: the best tire repairman in Cárdenas, not just for his work, but because he resists raising the prices of his services," Luzardo recounted.

She further explained that due to frequent power outages and material shortages, this worker and his family have ingeniously set up a charcoal stove right on the street. While they use it for their tire repair work, they also offer it kindly to their neighbors, who each morning use the embers to brew their coffee.

"In these tough times, he has had to reinvent himself," Luzardo noted, emphasizing that the family "is always ready to help everyone." This gesture not only allows many to start their day with a hot cup of coffee but also sparks a sense of community and hope amid scarcity.

On an island where daily life becomes increasingly challenging, small acts like these — sharing warmth, coffee, and kindness — uphold what is essential: dignity and camaraderie among neighbors.

Other examples of daily struggle also emerge from the island. A young man shared on social media the reality of searching for water as if it were a hidden treasure, highlighting the almost unsustainable conditions faced for basic needs like drinking or cooking.
