German Husband Creates His Own Father's Day, But Cuban Wife Delivers a Shocking Truth

Sunday, June 15, 2025 by Michael Hernandez

A TikTok video has captured the hearts of many Cubans both on and off the island with its blend of humor, tenderness, and the cultural clash familiar to many mixed couples. In the clip, a German man married to a Cuban woman, known as @gisellyfajardo81, decides to celebrate himself on Father's Day.

While his wife is still asleep, he carefully arranges several gifts and breakfast in bed, all set to surprise himself. He then pretends to be asleep. When she wakes up and sees the theatrically staged scene, she responds with a mix of surprise and affection. "Oh my God, my love... thank you so much," he says. However, she quickly clarifies the situation with typical Cuban humor: "But honey, today is Father's Day in Cuba... are you Cuban?"

Without hesitation, he replies, "Yes, I know, I am Cuban!"

Understanding the Date Mix-Up

What seemed to many as a simple date mix-up actually has a cultural explanation. In Cuba, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June, whereas in Germany, it occurred on Thursday, May 25 this year, coinciding with the Christian holiday of Ascension Day (Christi Himmelfahrt).

Since 1936, Ascension Day has been an official holiday in Germany and eventually merged with Father's Day celebrations. Some religious interpretations suggest a symbolic connection: Jesus' ascension to Heaven represents a union with his Heavenly Father, which might have influenced the shared origins of these commemorations, though this is not conclusively proven.

Father's Day Traditions in Germany

Diverging from the family-centered style in Cuba, Father's Day in Germany has evolved into a true male celebration. Since the 19th century, men would relax all morning while their wives prepared a generous lunch. Then, they were placed in decorated carts and taken to the village square, where a "Father of the Year" was even chosen.

Today, this tradition continues with a more spirited twist. Groups of fathers venture into the countryside with carts filled with beers and Schnaps (a type of brandy), stopping at a comfortable meadow to toast to fatherhood—and to the existence of alcohol itself. A popular saying sums it up: "Alcohol is bad, so we must get rid of it."

However, the celebration's excesses are no laughing matter: every year, German Father's Day sees the highest number of brawls and a significant increase in car accidents, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office.
