Cuban Leader Condemns Israeli Airstrike on Iran, Warns of Threats to Global Peace

Saturday, June 14, 2025 by Daniel Colon

Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel has voiced strong opposition to the recent Israeli airstrike on Iranian territory, which occurred in the early hours and has sparked widespread international reactions due to the potential escalation of tensions in the Middle East. From his account on social media platform X, Díaz-Canel declared, "We vehemently condemn the attacks carried out by Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran, actions which irresponsibly heighten tensions in the Middle East and endanger both regional and global peace and security with unpredictable consequences."

He further urged for an end to what he termed as "barbarism" and emphasized the need to respect International Law. His statement joins the chorus of criticism from Iran's allies and other global players concerned about the geopolitical repercussions of the attack.

Strengthening Ties: Cuba and Iran

The relationship between Cuba and Iran has seen significant strengthening in recent years, driven by a bilateral agenda focused on strategic cooperation and shared ideological views. In December 2023, Díaz-Canel made an official visit to Tehran, where he was welcomed by Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, and several agreements were signed in sectors including energy, health, and technology.

During this trip, the Cuban leader expressed a desire to “set higher collaboration goals” with Iran, lauding the relationship as a continuation of the alliance established during Fidel Castro's era. This political alignment has been reinforced by both regimes in the face of international pressure, particularly from democratic governments that criticize their repressive practices.

Cuba and Iran share an authoritarian model of societal and information control and align on common stances in international forums where they oppose the Western liberal order. Beyond economic agreements, their alliance is sustained by mutual support against international sanctions, isolation, and condemnation for human rights violations.

U.S. Stance on Israeli Actions

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has denied any involvement by his country in the Israeli military operation. "Israel acted unilaterally against Iran. We did not participate in attacks against Iran and our primary concern remains the protection of U.S. forces in the region," Rubio stated in an official release.

He added that the Donald Trump administration has maintained communication with its partners in the region and has taken steps to safeguard its personnel. Rubio also emphasized that Israel views this action as "necessary for its own defense," and warned that "Iran must not target U.S. interests or personnel."

Aftermath of the Israeli Airstrike

The Israeli air offensive took place at approximately 3:30 AM local time in Tehran, targeting military and nuclear facilities. Among the confirmed casualties were the commander-in-chief of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Hossein Salami, and at least six nuclear scientists. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the operation as "successful" and stated it will continue until the Iranian threat is eliminated.

In response, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei vowed retaliation, asserting that Israel "must prepare for severe punishment." The Natanz nuclear plant suffered damage, although the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported no increase in radiation levels. Facilities in Fordow, Isfahan, and Bushehr remained unaffected.

The attack led to a significant surge in oil prices, with increases reaching up to 13%, and provoked condemnation from Russia, China, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, and other nations. The United States called for an urgent National Security Council meeting and reiterated from the Pentagon that it neither participated in nor provided support for the Israeli offensive.
