This week, the community of Mayarí in Holguín Province was shaken by a violent attempted murder allegedly motivated by theft. Luis Almira, the suspect, was apprehended after allegedly attacking a farmer in an attempt to steal over 300,000 Cuban pesos and other personal belongings.

According to a report shared on Facebook by Cazador-Cazado, a page aligned with the Ministry of the Interior, Almira allegedly lunged at his victim without warning, trying to strangle him with his bare hands. After the assault, the attacker fled the scene, leaving the farmer injured but thankfully out of danger.

The collaborative effort between law enforcement, the local community, and the victim led to Almira's swift capture, preventing the robbery from being completed. The incident has sparked outrage among locals, many of whom are calling for harsh penalties for such violent acts. If found guilty, Luis Almira faces significant charges for attempted murder and robbery with violence.

Rising Violence in Cuba

Insecurity has been escalating across Cuba, underscored by the brutal murder of an elderly man in Manzanillo, Granma Province, last week. This incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the growing wave of crime and violence in the country.

The victim, identified on social media as 70-year-old Edilberto Álvarez Fonseca, was attacked by five individuals in the early hours of last Wednesday with the intent to rob him. Similarly, at the end of May, the citizens of Ciego de Ávila were left in shock by the murder of Adrián, a beloved carpenter from Maceo Street. This crime has led to widespread calls for justice on social media.

Due to the lack of official information—a common occurrence in state-run media when such incidents happen—contradictory accounts have emerged online. It is reported that the thieves took a solid gold chain valued at $5,000 USD. The victim was confirmed to have been shot, but not before being subjected to brutal treatment.
