The human rights organization Cubalex has issued an urgent alert regarding the Cuban regime's escalating repression against university students who have voiced opposition to the price increase imposed by ETECSA, the state-run telecommunications monopoly.

In a statement shared on its official Facebook page, Cubalex reported that students from the University of Medical Sciences in Granma are experiencing significant pressure. The report indicates that both the students and their families have been receiving calls from private numbers and have been summoned by the Revolutionary National Police (PNR), where they are being coerced into signing retraction letters for their public statements.

The Atmosphere of Fear at Cuban Universities

At the University of Oriente, an anonymous complaint highlights the tense environment. During a meeting with university officials, some students referred to Cuba as a "failed state," while expressing fears of facing potential reprisals. This sense of apprehension is palpable across various campuses.

In response to complaints about inadequate lighting in common areas of a university dormitory, authorities promptly installed lights, an action seen as a reactive measure to prevent further protests.

Institutional Censorship and Intimidation

Students from the Central University "Marta Abreu" of Las Villas have reported institutional censorship, the Federation of University Students (FEU)'s support for ETECSA's measures, and the criminalization of protests. Cubalex has also noted the intimidating presence of State Security agents, coupled with institutional manipulation and direct intimidation tactics aimed at quelling dissent.

The Academic Freedom Observatory has revealed that plainclothes agents have interrogated several students on the campuses of CUJAE and Las Villas Central University. Cubalex concludes that this repression is a direct response to the complaints against ETECSA, whose pricing policies infringe on rights such as freedom of expression and access to information, exacerbating the digital divide and social exclusion in the country.

A Wider Pattern of Institutional Violence

Cubalex warns that these actions are part of a broader pattern of institutional violence, characterized by intimidation, surveillance, censorship, digital coercion, and the complicity of academic structures. The crackdown has also extended to activists and social media users who have shown solidarity with the university protests.

"If you are a student who has faced pressure, harassment, or censorship for exercising your right to free expression, speak out. You are not alone. Contact us securely," urged Cubalex in the closing of their statement.

Understanding the Impact of ETECSA's Price Increase

What is the main issue with ETECSA's price hike?

The primary concern is that ETECSA's increased tariffs limit access to telecommunications, infringing on freedom of expression and information, and deepening the digital divide and social exclusion.

How are Cuban students being affected by these protests?

Cuban students are facing significant pressure, including intimidation from police, coercion to retract statements, and a general atmosphere of fear and potential reprisals for their involvement in protests.

What role does Cubalex play in this situation?

Cubalex acts as a watchdog organization, raising awareness about human rights violations and providing support and guidance to those affected by the regime's repressive actions.
