Trial Begins for Those Involved in Last Year's Mass Brawl at Finca de los Monos

Wednesday, June 11, 2025 by Isabella Sanchez

The Popular Provincial Court of Havana commenced proceedings on Tuesday against individuals implicated in the severe disturbances that erupted a year ago near the well-known Finca de los Monos, situated in Havana's Cerro municipality. According to Cubadebate, the prosecution's provisional conclusions cite charges of public disorder and illegal possession of weapons or explosives.

Among the accused, seven remain in provisional detention, two face charges for subsequent actions, and another eleven are appearing from outside custody. State media reports on the trial emphasize that defendants' procedural rights and guarantees are being upheld.

The Background of the Incident

The legal proceedings trace back to June 8, 2024, during a youth cultural event titled "Start of Youth Summer 2024," held near Finca de los Monos. The gathering, aimed at teenagers aged 12 to 17, was orchestrated by the Klatus Creativo initiative with Cerro municipality's backing and was promoted on Cuban television, despite later being declared "unauthorized" by authorities.

The day descended into chaos as groups of young people, some armed with machetes and knives, engaged in a violent brawl, resulting in chaotic scenes and numerous injuries. Initially, official sources downplayed the incident, reporting only two non-life-threatening injuries. However, social media reports and leaked videos depicted a more alarming situation. Official spokesperson Humberto López later acknowledged at least six injuries, although unverified accounts on social media suggested possible fatalities, which were denied by authorities.

Controversy Surrounding the Event's Organization

Finca de los Monos expressed regret over the incident on social media, citing an underestimation of the event's turnout while clarifying that no injuries occurred within its premises. The event aimed to offer an affordable cultural and recreational space for teens during the summer. Despite official statements, promotional material, including state media interventions, indicated that the event was coordinated with local authorities and had planned access controls to prevent alcohol and tobacco use.

Cuban authorities noted that the disturbances occurred outside the venue, with order restored by the intervention of the National Revolutionary Police.

A Reflection of Deeper Issues

The outbreak of violence surrounding the event has been seen by some as a troubling indication of rising insecurity and lack of opportunities for young people in Cuba. Videos on social media revealed adolescents, some as young as 13, involved in the altercations, highlighting a more complex social reality beyond the isolated incident.

As the trial progresses, it is anticipated that individual responsibilities will be clarified, and the legal ramifications of one of Havana's most violent youth incidents in recent years will be determined.
