A heartwarming tale of a Cuban-Mexican dental couple has captured the attention of many in Puerto Rico after a family photo celebrating their graduation day went viral. Aarón Ávila from Cuba and Vianeth Velarde from Mexico successfully revalidated their dentistry degrees in San Juan after two years of rigorous study. Balancing their jobs and the responsibilities of raising their children, Ana Paula and Danilo, their story resonates with many immigrants who juggle similar challenges without familial support in a foreign land.
From Havana to Dentistry: A Journey Begins
Aarón, originally from Havana, embarked on his journey in dentistry at the Faculty of Stomatology in Cuba's capital. He left in his third year to pursue a scholarship at the University of Baja California in Mexico, where he completed his degree. Specializing in Endodontics at the same university, Aarón met Vianeth, and together they started a family. After some time in Mexico, they emigrated to the United States, settling in California. Though they had to start over, they remained steadfast in their goal to practice dentistry fully.
The Challenge of Degree Revalidation for Immigrants
"Studying to revalidate a degree while raising kids is incredibly challenging. We don't have family here to support us," Aarón shared in an interview with CiberCuba. Vianeth initiated the revalidation process and was accepted into a program in Puerto Rico, shortly followed by Aarón's acceptance. "It was a significant achievement for us. It's rare for two people to enter the same program in the same state and year," Aarón explained.
The couple graduated as Doctors of Dental Medicine (DMD). Vianeth plans to pursue a second specialization in Endodontics in Puerto Rico, while Aarón completed a General Practice Residency (GPR) program and will continue his professional development with work trips to Florida.
A Photograph Celebrating Success and Perseverance
The uplifting image that brought attention to their inspiring story was captured by Bea Fine Art Photography. It depicts the family joyously celebrating the couple's graduation, with their younger son Danilo adding a cheerful touch. The photographer accompanied the image with a heartfelt message: "I'm thrilled to congratulate this young couple who show us that we can achieve anything we desire. They have beautiful children who are their greatest motivation. They are an example for many."
Aarón and Vianeth are excited about this new chapter. "Puerto Rico has welcomed us warmly, and it's been incredibly rewarding to see how our experience has been received." Despite their success, they acknowledge the hard work and challenges along the way, emphasizing the importance of sharing their journey.
"There's a myth that you can't revalidate a medical degree in the U.S. if you have children or are working a lot. We want other immigrants to know that it is possible. It's challenging, but you can succeed and achieve your dreams while keeping your family happy and united," they assert.
