German Shepherd from Cuba Triumphs in Miami: Skaye Secures Top Honors in Canine Utility Competition

Tuesday, June 10, 2025 by Mia Dominguez

Skaye, a German Shepherd born in Matanzas, Cuba, has once again made headlines in Florida, USA, by excelling in a prestigious canine utility competition held in Miami by the Greater Miami Schutzhund Club. Under the guidance of Cuban trainer Ale Sabina, Skaye clinched first-place wins in three categories: IGP2 level competition, Best Protection, and High Trial, which recognizes the highest overall score at the event on Saturday, May 31.

Notably, Skaye is the only Cuban-born German Shepherd, from a beauty line and raised outside a state federation, to achieve these certifications on American soil. This recent victory marks a significant milestone for both the dog and her trainer, who had previously won the BH-VT title, IGP1, and the Best Utility Dog of the Year award in March.

"We barely had time to train this time. She amazed me with her performance. She gave it her all and proved to be an outstanding dog. It was pure instinct at play, showcasing her talent," Ale expressed. The IGP discipline (Internationale Gebrauchshunde Prüfungsordnung), formerly known as IPO or Schutzhund, tests dogs' skills in work, obedience, and protection and is considered one of the most demanding in the canine world.

From Cuba to Miami: A Tale of Loyalty and Resilience

Skaye's journey has been one of sacrifice and resilience. Born in a private cynological association in Matanzas, she was separated from her owner when he emigrated. However, Ale Sabina was determined to reunite with her, successfully bringing her to the United States after a challenging immigration process.

Upon her arrival, Skaye faced severe health challenges, battling ehrlichiosis, a tick-borne disease, and heartworm. She was weak, malnourished, and on the brink of death. "It was incredibly tough because I was alone in the United States and couldn't stop working, but I managed to save her life," Ale recounted in a March interview with CiberCuba. After her recovery and months of rigorous training, Skaye was accepted into the American Schutzhund Club and began competing officially in the IGP world. Since then, she hasn't stopped achieving success.

Aiming for the National Championship

The recent triumph in Miami solidifies that Skaye and Ale are prepared for their next significant challenge: competing at the national level in the United States. Achieving success there would make her the first non-officially federated Cuban Shepherd to reach such heights in elite canine sports.

"This is a lifelong commitment," Ale states. This unique duo underscores the value of perseverance, the human-canine bond, and the potential of Cuban cynology beyond official structures.
