Cuban Woman Criticizes Sister in Cuba, Cuts Ties: "Basic Necessities Aren't Enough; They Demand Luxury"

Saturday, June 7, 2025 by Joseph Morales

A Cuban woman residing in the United States recently took to TikTok to express her frustration with her family back in Cuba. She claimed that despite her efforts to support them, they constantly demand expensive, branded items.

"I just blocked my only sister who lives in Cuba. I don't know if this happens in other nationalities, or if the audacity of people in Cuba is unique," began the Cuban TikToker known on social media as @mirelis_narraciones. "Sending them food, toilet paper, and keeping their phone topped up isn't enough for them; they want luxury," she stated.

The content creator detailed how her sister has specific demands. For instance, when her nephew's phone broke, they insisted on a Samsung with certain features, claiming it was the preferred model among his friends in Cuba. "It's not about what you can afford, my sister. It's about the brand, the style, the latest model," the expatriate Cuban pondered.

When she wanted to buy school shoes for her nephew, choosing durable black Puma sneakers for over $30, her sister requested Vans instead, because those are popular on the island. "Oh, my sister, you know what's trendy here? Prada, which I love, but you know who wears it? Those who can afford it. I have to buy Zara with my money to send shoes for you, the kid, mom, and even medicine for the neighbor," she said with irony.

The Challenge of Family Expectations

"The issue with people in Cuba is that the country is in a state of decline. Basic needs don't cut it; you can't be strapped for cash or fall behind because they demand brands," she added without holding back. "There comes a point when you become the tourist, and they, the family, become the opportunists."

The video went viral on TikTok, sparking diverse reactions. Some viewers empathized with her, sharing similar experiences with relatives in Cuba, while others criticized her for airing personal grievances online and questioned her decision to block her sister, arguing that family should always come first.
