In Cuba, there is a growing sense of despair among citizens regarding a young man from Havana who has been severely impacted by a drug commonly referred to as "the chemical." This substance has led him to violent outbursts against his mother.

Danay Rodríguez, a former neighbor of the young man, has taken to social media to plead for help for Jan Carlos Mena, who is struggling with a chronic addiction to "the chemical." She wrote on Facebook, "I saw this young man born and grow up, and I tried to help his mother with him and his sister. I did what I could, but evil is everywhere, including in Cuba, and 'the chemical' is destroying him. Only God knows the pain it causes me to see him like this. Please pray for him; his name is Jan Carlos Mena."

Another neighbor explained that Jan Carlos's addiction has resulted in aggressive behavior, noting, "He has already grabbed his mother by the neck twice."

Lianis Mena, who reportedly is Jan Carlos's sister, echoed Danay's sentiments and blamed their mother for the situation: "This is exactly how my brother is, but he refuses help, and my mother is to blame for that."

In response to online comments suggesting that Jan Carlos be admitted to a treatment facility, Lianis Mena replied that their mother has been reporting him instead of seeking rehabilitation. "Instead of getting him help and taking away all that, Dunia just keeps reporting him," she stated.

The drug known as "the chemical" has gained popularity in recent years, particularly among Cuba's youth and teenagers. Experts from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) have acknowledged the presence of a new and deadly version of this drug in the country. It contains potent substances like fentanyl, an opioid linked to tens of thousands of overdose deaths globally, as well as formaldehyde, animal anesthetics, benzodiazepines, and phenobarbital.

This drug is often sold as paper strips and has been associated with numerous cases of poisoning in Cuban healthcare facilities. Its adverse effects range from hallucinations and rapid heartbeat to organ failure and death risk. Additionally, its consumption has been linked to increased violent incidents, drug-induced psychosis, and self-destructive behaviors.

Despite law enforcement efforts to crack down on the trafficking of this substance, it remains widely accessible due to its low cost and distribution in schools, peripheral neighborhoods, and through informal networks.
