Rising STI and HIV Cases in Pinar del Río Prompt Health Warnings

Saturday, June 7, 2025 by Ethan Navarro

Health authorities in Pinar del Río have issued a warning about the increasing prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

Leading this initiative, Marilin González Tielve, who heads the program for the prevention and control of STIs and HIV/AIDS in Pinar del Río, highlighted a rise in reported cases of sexually transmitted diseases. These include gonorrhea, syphilis, condyloma acuminatum, herpes simplex, and HIV.

A staggering 52.8% of the affected individuals are situated in the Pinar del Río municipality. However, other areas such as San Juan y Martínez, Consolación del Sur, Guane, and Los Palacios are also witnessing an increase in cases. Without addressing the shortage of condoms in the country, the official noted that more people are now at risk of infection. Those particularly vulnerable include individuals with frequent partner changes or those engaging in transactional sex for any benefit.

"Individuals with serodiscordant partners, meaning those who engage in sexual activity with partners infected with these viruses and bacteria, are at higher risk of contracting or spreading an STI. Unprotected sex further exacerbates this risk," officials stated, yet did not acknowledge the lack of condoms available through Cuban pharmacies.

The authorities claim to distribute condoms at STI clinics across all municipalities and in medical offices "to reach these key populations due to the risks involved," but these efforts are insufficient.

The surge in STIs across Cuba has caused widespread concern among the population in nearly every province. While the government remains partially silent on these issues, reports continue to surface illustrating the dire situation. Amidst a healthcare crisis and lacking protective measures, health leaders are relying on phone counseling, in-person advice, and educational talks.

Condom scarcity is a pressing issue in Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) pharmacies, with prices soaring on the black market. Last year, condoms sold for over 100 pesos each in the informal market in Sancti Spíritus.
