Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony has firmly stated his agency's stance on illegal immigration: they will not participate in immigration raids conducted by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). "We have other priorities in this community, and immigration is not one of them, without diminishing its importance," expressed the sheriff, as reported by Local 10.

The announcement was made during a crucial county budget meeting where a commissioner raised questions about immigration policies and the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO)'s involvement in federal operations. Sheriff Tony emphasized that his focus as a law enforcement leader is on public safety and crime prevention, regardless of individuals' immigration status. "I don't care what country you're from. If you commit a crime in this county, I'm coming after you," he asserted.

This stance contrasts with the policies promoted by the administration of former President Donald Trump, which reinstated the federal 287-G program allowing local agencies to cooperate with ICE in pursuing individuals without legal status. Tony also openly opposes the approach of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who signed a state law this year to toughen measures against illegal immigration.

"I refuse to accept the notion that we need to go door to door, arrest children, visit daycares or restaurants, and snatch people off the street. That's not our jurisdiction nor our responsibility, and I won't be a part of it," he emphasized.

In a Facebook post, the sheriff reiterated his dedication to integrity and public safety, highlighting that his department's decisions will be guided by the community's real needs, not political interests. "I will continue to lead with integrity, stand up for what's right, and ensure that our staff has the resources it needs to protect and serve all residents, without letting politics get in the way," he wrote.

The message has been well-received among community organizations and immigrant rights advocates, who have expressed concerns about the climate of fear generated by ICE raids. Broward joins a growing list of jurisdictions across the country that have chosen not to engage in immigration enforcement actions that they see as outside the scope of local police duties.
