Florida County Sheriff Faces Arrest: Charges and Investigation Details

On Thursday, June 5, 2025, Marcos López, the sheriff of Osceola County, was taken into custody on grave charges of organized crime and conspiracy related to organized crime. Florida's Attorney General, James Uthmeier, disclosed that the sheriff is implicated in "a vast illegal gambling operation in Central Florida and a public corruption scheme."

In an official statement, Uthmeier detailed that Marcos López "played a multi-faceted role in expanding and safeguarding this unlawful enterprise, leveraging his position to shield it from law enforcement." The statement further notes that López initially became involved with this network to secure "campaign contributions and personal payments," and his involvement persisted after assuming office.

Uthmeier remarked, “This is a sad day for Florida and our law enforcement community. We place significant trust in our constitutional officers, particularly those on the front lines defending our communities. However, the law must be applied equally, regardless of position, power, or branch of government. Public officials should never exploit public trust for personal gain.”

The illegal betting network allegedly generated more than $21.6 million in illicit profits and operated across multiple counties, notably Osceola and Lake. The arrest was carried out by agents from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), following an investigation that began in 2023.

FDLE Commissioner Mark Glass commented in an official release, “This case revealed that López violated the trust and integrity expected of him as the duly elected sheriff of Osceola County.”

The Background of Marcos López

Marcos López, of Puerto Rican descent, took office in January 2021 after being elected in November 2020, becoming the first Hispanic to hold this position in Osceola County and the state of Florida.
