In what is being hailed as one of the largest immigration operations in recent U.S. history, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced on Tuesday the arrest of 1,461 individuals with irregular immigration status during a large-scale raid conducted throughout May in Massachusetts. The operation, called “Operation Patriot,” was supported by various federal agencies, including the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the DEA, and the Coast Guard, among others.

According to ICE, more than half of those detained had criminal records either in the United States or in their home countries, with offenses such as aggravated homicide, rape, child abuse, kidnapping, and drug trafficking. Several detainees were alleged members of gangs like MS-13, Trinitarios, 18th Street, and Tren de Aragua, as well as individuals wanted through Interpol red notices, the agency reported.

“Every individual taken into custody was violating our immigration laws, but many also committed heinous crimes. With this operation, Massachusetts is now a safer place,” stated Patricia H. Hyde, the acting director of ICE's Boston office. Additionally, authorities disclosed that at least 277 of those arrested had previously been issued deportation orders by immigration judges, which had been disregarded.

Significant Arrests on High-Profile Islands

One of the most noteworthy aspects of the operation was the simultaneous arrests on the high-profile tourist islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, where approximately 40 individuals were detained, including an alleged child sexual predator and a member of an international criminal organization. The Coast Guard assisted in transporting those arrested from the islands to the mainland, as highlighted in a report on the ICE website.

Federal Collaboration and Public Safety Concerns

The operation was coordinated with the assistance of the FBI, the ATF, the Department of State, and other federal agencies. Kimberly Milka, the special agent in charge of the FBI in Boston, described it as a "massive and necessary" initiative that removed individuals from the streets who posed an ongoing threat to public safety.

Despite the operation's scale and the severity of the crimes attributed to the detainees, critics have pointed to potential political motivations behind the raid. Analysts and human rights organizations have noted that such operations often coincide with national crises that affect the federal government's image.

In this instance, “Operation Patriot” comes amid rising economic tensions stemming from the commercial collapse following the re-imposition of protectionist tariffs by the Trump administration, which have led to inflationary and supply issues.
