A shooting that took place last weekend outside a Florida bar stemmed from an argument over a $5 beer, according to the DeLand Police Department. The incident not only led to an arrest but could also result in significant changes for the bar where it occurred.
Calvin Gilbert, 55, was taken into custody on Sunday in Daytona Beach. He faces charges of first-degree attempted murder and using a firearm under the influence of alcohol. Gilbert is currently being held without bail at the Volusia County Jail.
Incident Sparks Concerns Over Bar's Safety
The altercation began in the early hours of Saturday morning outside McCabe’s Bar on Amelia Avenue in DeLand. Witnesses reported that Gilbert had purchased a $5 beer for a man he was drinking with. However, as the bar was closing, he confronted the man in the parking lot, demanding his money back.
The situation escalated rapidly when, amidst a heated exchange, Gilbert brandished a gun and fired. The victim managed to dodge the bullet by ducking, which instead struck an outdoor cooler and subsequently a wall of the bar.
Increased Security Measures Recommended
Though no one was injured, the shooting was captured on the bar’s security cameras. Police identified Gilbert through a photo lineup and apprehended him less than 34 hours after the incident.
The shooting has raised alarms among McCabe’s Bar regulars, especially since it's the second shooting incident linked to the establishment within the same month, as reported by WFLA. Previously, a former football player was arrested for allegedly murdering a man at the same venue.
As a consequence, the police have mandated that the bar alter its closing hours from 2:00 a.m. to between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Additionally, Police Chief Jason Umberger has proposed stricter security measures, such as entry screenings and hiring security staff.
"It's absurd to think someone nearly lost their life over something so insignificant," remarked Umberger, addressing the trivial cause of the shooting. He also mentioned that discussions are underway with the state prosecutor to file additional charges against Gilbert, particularly for discharging a firearm in an occupied building.
