The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation temporarily shut down several eateries in the southern part of the state last week due to severe health code violations, including significant cockroach infestations. Among the closures was Tehillah Garden Restaurant located in Pembroke Pines, where inspectors discovered over 90 live and dead cockroaches in various parts of the kitchen, according to Local 10.
Inspectors reported finding more than 10 live cockroaches inside a wall-mounted soap dispenser, another 15 between the wall and a three-compartment sink, and 20 dead cockroaches within the same dispenser. Additionally, dead cockroaches were found in spider webs, beneath dry storage shelves, and in the oven's gas system.
Beyond the pest issues, a "Stop Sale" order was issued for food stored at improper temperatures, including cooked beef, goat, turkey, and griot that were kept outside the safe range for over 24 hours. Inspectors also noted improperly cooled cooked rice and beans left overnight.
Tehillah Garden Restaurant was closed on May 21 and permitted to reopen on May 22 after a follow-up inspection, which still found cockroach activity. Tu Cocinita Catering in Hialeah was also shut down on May 16 after live cockroaches were discovered in a cabinet under a sink in the food preparation area. The establishment was actively preparing meals for health programs, increasing authorities' concerns. Additionally, milk was found stored directly on the floor, a repeat violation.
In Hollywood, The Hollywood Donut Factory was closed on May 20 after at least 22 cockroaches, both live and dead, were found in food prep and storage areas, as well as near beverage stations. Inspectors also noted accumulations of grease, food debris, and dirt on non-food contact surfaces and equipment.
Meanwhile, Sunshine Bistros in Lauderhill was shut down on May 14. Inspectors reported about eight live and dead cockroaches in the kitchen, along with cleanliness issues in microwaves and deficiencies in food cooling methods, posing a risk to food safety.
Although not closed, Un Attimo Specialty Coffee in Fort Lauderdale received a follow-up inspection order after live flying insects were detected. One insect was seen landing on baked goods in the display case, prompting a "Stop Sale" order on the contaminated items.
All establishments that were closed were allowed to reopen after thorough cleaning and compliance with follow-up inspection requirements.
