Renowned leader of La Charanga Habanera, David Calzado, has put to rest rumors about any intentions of relocating to the United States. During a candid discussion on the podcast “Solo gente bonita,” hosted by Cuban YouTuber Jesús Cazorla, Calzado addressed the speculation head-on.
When directly asked by the interviewer, “Is there any truth to the rumor that you want to move to the United States?”, Calzado responded emphatically, “That’s the most unfounded thing I’ve ever heard, the most absurd, the biggest fabrication.”
The Cuban musician clarified that his numerous trips to the U.S. have primarily been for professional commitments with his well-known music group, as well as personal visits. “I've traveled to the United States 60 times; I have 60 entries. I've gone with La Charanga for concerts and have visited as a tourist many times, and I've enjoyed it. People often equate Miami with the entire U.S., but Miami is just a small part of it.”
Calzado took the opportunity to express his admiration for the diverse cities across the country, although he was clear that he has no plans to settle there. “The United States is vast, with many incredible cities, but if I were ever to live outside of Cuba, which I doubt, it would be in Spain,” he stated.
He also shared that he has a daughter and a grandchild living in the U.S., but reiterated that moving there is not on his agenda. Calzado's remarks come at a time when many Cuban artists choose to establish themselves outside the island, often in pursuit of the so-called “American dream.”
