A Cuban man named Yordani was apprehended in the La Risueñita neighborhood of Micro 9, Santiago de Cuba, for illegally cultivating marijuana in his backyard, according to the Facebook page Héroes del Moncada, which aligns with the Ministry of the Interior (MININT). Yordani tended to the plants as if they were part of a typical garden, watering them and monitoring their growth until some reached over a meter in height. Authorities claimed the individual intended to use them for criminal purposes, an act that is harshly penalized under Cuban law.

"No story could justify his actions when the police arrived at his residence and uncovered what was truly planted in his yard," the publication noted. Now, Yordani faces legal proceedings for contributing to the spread of illegal drugs.

Part of a Broader Anti-Drug Campaign

This incident is part of a nationwide anti-drug crusade launched by the regime, which has recently reported several operations in the province. Just last week, a young man was arrested in Salvador Rosales, Songo-La Maya, for possessing a plantation of more than 2,000 marijuana plants. Additionally, a plantation was dismantled in the mountainous area of La Tabla, Tercer Frente.

On Monday, the Provincial Popular Court of Santiago de Cuba sentenced two individuals, aged 25 and 30, to 12 years in prison for crimes related to illicit drugs. The authorities, who had previously turned a blind eye for a considerable time, now emphasize the negative impact these activities have on society and reaffirm their commitment to continue operations to combat drug production and distribution in the country.
