In a sweeping operation aimed at dismantling a human trafficking and sexual exploitation network, at least one Cuban national was among the 255 individuals apprehended by federal agencies in the United States. This was confirmed by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) earlier this week. The nine-day operation, which commenced on May 2, was spearheaded by the Polk County Sheriff's Office in partnership with ICE and various local, state, and federal agencies. The focus was on crimes such as solicitation of prostitution, prostitution, facilitating sexual encounters, and child exploitation.

Initially, reports indicated that a former NFL player and a high-ranking Red Cross executive were among those detained, both implicated in illicit activities uncovered during the operation. However, details about the nationalities of those arrested emerged later when ICE released additional information, confirming the presence of migrants from Cuba, Venezuela, Honduras, Mexico, Haiti, Colombia, Guatemala, and Brazil.

Among the more than 250 arrests made, at least 50 were foreign-born individuals, with over 30 placed under immigration detention orders due to their irregular status. Once their criminal proceedings are resolved, they will be transferred to ICE custody for deportation. "We are committed to identifying and removing the most dangerous foreign criminals. Our officers are on the streets every day to safeguard public safety," stated David Gritte, deputy director of ICE ERO in the Miami-Tampa region.

In addition to the prostitution-related arrests, the operation successfully identified and apprehended 10 suspects known as "travelers," men who attempted to engage in sexual activities with minors. Six of these arrests were directly carried out by an agent from ICE's Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) team in Tampa. An ICE forensic interview specialist also participated in the operation, conducting interrogations following the arrests to identify potential victims of commercial sexual trafficking.

"It is profoundly disturbing to encounter such ruthless child predators," remarked Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, emphasizing that the authorities' priority is to protect minors. Florida, particularly areas like Miami and Tampa, hosts a significant Cuban migrant population. While many seek legitimate opportunities, ICE warns that migrants in irregular situations may be more vulnerable to involvement or recruitment by criminal networks.

Authorities reiterated that anyone found illegally in the U.S. and arrested during such operations could face deportation proceedings under federal law.
