Tripadvisor has unveiled its Annual Summer Travel Index, detailing the international destinations that are set to be the most popular among U.S. travelers from June to August 2025. This study, conducted through surveys between March 26 and April 8 with over 2,800 participants from six countries including the United States, is complemented by an analysis of hotel searches and other lodging options on the Tripadvisor platform.
The findings highlight a strong inclination towards beach and relaxation tourism, while still valuing urban and cultural experiences. The Caribbean stands out prominently in the rankings, but notably, Cuba is absent from the list of top choices.
The Caribbean's Appeal Without Cuba
Among the top ten favorite destinations, four are located in the Caribbean. The Dominican Republic leads with two areas maintaining their popularity due to competitive prices and high-quality services: Punta Cana and Cap Cana (southern Punta Cana). Other favored Caribbean spots for Americans include Oranjestad (Aruba) and Cancún in Mexico, with Cabo San Lucas also shining as a tourist hotspot on Mexico's Pacific coast.
These destinations offer stunning beaches and innovative hotel infrastructure. According to Tripadvisor, they continue to attract American travelers due to their value for money and easy access thanks to regular flights from various U.S. cities.
Why Isn't Cuba on the Radar?
The current relationship between Havana and Washington does not support a surge of American tourism to Cuba, unlike neighboring countries such as Mexico or the Dominican Republic, which excel in accessibility and offer a wide variety of options for American tourists.
Cuba remains off the radar for U.S. tourists, which can be attributed to several factors such as travel restrictions imposed by Washington, limited air connectivity, restricted access to international payment methods on the island, and deficiencies in hotel and tourism infrastructure compared to other regional destinations.
This is compounded by the energy crisis affecting the country, with frequent blackouts and shortages of food, fuel, and other essential supplies. The travel experience in Cuba leaves much to be desired.
Even Cuban-Americans are reducing their visits to the island. Data from the National Office of Statistics (ONEI) shows that in April 2024, Cuba received 58,831 travelers from the United States. By the same period in 2025, the number had dropped to 48,589.
