Electric Company Leaders Claim Readiness Amid Military Exercise in Cuba

Sunday, May 25, 2025 by Zoe Salinas

Leaders of the Electric Union (UNE), often criticized by the Cuban populace, have declared themselves "Ready and Alert!" during the People's Exercise on Disaster Situations, Meteoro 2025. "Today, Electric Union conducts a video conference with all sector companies, #MeteoroExercise2025 Ready and Alert! Electric Union #CubaWillPrevail," reads a tweet from the institution, filled with the regime's usual triumphant slogans.

In stark contrast to the frequent blackouts suffered by Cubans, the Cuban regime marked the Meteoro 2025 exercise this Saturday, with an extravagant use of electricity and air conditioning, despite the country's severe energy deficit. The event, presided over by leader Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, head of the National Defense Council, saw Defense Councils across Havana and other Cuban provinces organizing meetings in government buildings equipped with air conditioners and televisions for video conferences.

In areas such as Matanzas, Santiago de Cuba, the capital city, and other regions, officials participated in air-conditioned rooms for an activity the regime deemed "essential for the preparation of management and command bodies and the population."

Power outages severely disrupt the daily lives of Cubans, impacting household activities, basic services, and family economies. These outages lead to a lack of water access, spoilage of refrigerated food and medicines, and interruptions in transportation and public services, fostering a climate of anxiety and desperation among the populace.

As a result, frustrated Cubans have taken to the streets to protest once again. In the early hours of Friday, May 24, new public demonstrations erupted in several Cuban cities, including Bayamo in the province of Granma, Cienfuegos, and Ciego de Ávila. These protests, sparked by the ongoing blackouts and critical shortages, were shared widely through videos on social media platforms.
