A Cuban national and three other undocumented immigrants have been apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) officers and are slated for deportation. They illegally crossed into the United States from Mexico last Sunday, aided by a smuggler who was also detained. According to a statement from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the group of five was intercepted near Lukeville on May 18th, and was subsequently located and arrested later that night.

The apprehended group consisted of a 49-year-old Cuban woman, a 27-year-old Uzbek woman traveling with her two young children, and a 38-year-old Mexican man suspected of guiding them on foot. The authorities withheld the identities of the individuals involved. "Agents stationed in Ajo made the arrest after surveillance technology detected a group of suspected illegal immigrants traversing a remote area near Lukeville around 5 p.m.," the report stated.

Officials who responded to the area found and took into custody the five foreigners who had illegally entered the U.S. through the Arizona desert that day. They were all transported to the Ajo Station for processing. The statement noted that the Mexican citizen will face criminal charges for human smuggling, in addition to charges for illegal entry into the country.

Meanwhile, the women and children are to undergo immigration deportation proceedings, revealed Sean McGoffin, Chief Patrol Agent of the Tucson Sector, in a social media post. Regarding the circumstances surrounding the arrests, the officer remarked, "Fortunately, border agents managed to detain them all without incident before they ventured further into the vast and deadly desert."

McGoffin elaborated that the investigation is ongoing and emphasized, "The Tucson Sector will continue to work with the U.S. Attorney's Office to pursue all applicable criminal charges." He warned about the dangers of smuggling through remote desert areas, especially for families with children, as highlighted on the CBP website.

He also stressed that the aim is "to dismantle human trafficking networks operating along the southwest border to ensure no one falls victim to unscrupulous smugglers." The stricter immigration policies under President Donald Trump's administration have significantly impacted Cuban irregular migration to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection statistics show a sharp decline in illegal entries by Cuban nationals. In April, the numbers plummeted to just 130 unauthorized entries.

Among the illegal Cuban entrants that month, 90 crossed the southern border with Mexico, 10 entered through the northern border with Canada, and 30 were intercepted at sea.
