Marco Rubio Warns Cuban Regime with Sanctions for Human Rights Violations

Thursday, May 22, 2025 by Ernesto Alvarez

U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, issued a stern warning on Wednesday to the Cuban regime, stating that officials who infringe upon the human rights of the Cuban people will face tangible repercussions. "Cuban regime officials who commit human rights abuses against the Cuban populace are on notice," Rubio declared on his official account on X.

The high-ranking official revealed that the United States has decided to impose sanctions on three Cuban judges and a prosecutor for their involvement in the arbitrary detention of young Luis Robles Elizástigui. "Today, the United States holds three Cuban judges and a Cuban prosecutor accountable for their role in the arbitrary detention of Luis Robles Elizástigui. As a result of this action, these individuals are now barred from entering our country," he stated.

Luis Robles was apprehended in December 2020 in Havana for holding a sign on the San Rafael Boulevard demanding freedom, an end to repression, and the release of dissident rapper Denis Solís. His case has since become emblematic of the repression against peaceful dissent in Cuba.

U.S. Sanctions Target Cuban Judicial Officials

On Wednesday, the U.S. government imposed sanctions on four Cuban judicial officials—three judges and one prosecutor—due to their involvement in the arbitrary arrest and sentencing of young protester Luis Robles Elizástigui, who was imprisoned in 2020 after peacefully demonstrating in Havana with a sign advocating for freedom and the end of oppression.

The sanctioned individuals include prosecutor Yanaisa Matos Legrá and judges Gladys María Padrón Canals, María Elena Fornari Conde, and Juan Sosa Orama, all associated with the Provincial People's Court of Havana, as reported by the State Department in a statement.

Robles was eventually released in January 2025 after serving most of his sentence. His detention was widely condemned by international organizations, and in 2022, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention deemed his imprisonment arbitrary and unjust.

The State Department reiterated that Robles was prosecuted solely for displaying a sign with the words: “Freedom, no + repression, #FreeDenis.” "This disproportionate response underscores the regime's intolerance towards dissent and the lack of fundamental freedoms on the island," it noted.
