Cuban Leader's Remark Sparks Outrage Amid Crippling Crisis: "Despite Blackouts and Shortages, There Are Positive Outcomes"

Wednesday, May 21, 2025 by Michael Hernandez

Amidst the severe economic, social, and energy turmoil in Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, the island's leader, has once again stirred public outrage with controversial remarks during an official tour in Esmeralda, a municipality in Camagüey province. During his visit to the Aguacate community, Díaz-Canel stated, "Even with blackouts, difficulties in household supplies, and medicine shortages—issues that won’t be resolved immediately—there are achievements and positive outcomes in every municipality." This statement was reported by the state-run newspaper, Adelante.

His comments come at a particularly sensitive time, as thousands of Cubans endure daily power cuts lasting over 20 hours, along with chronic shortages of food and medicine, and skyrocketing inflation that erodes wages. Many interpreted the leader's remarks as a mockery of the dire situation faced by the Cuban people.

Instead of announcing concrete measures to ease the crisis, Díaz-Canel once again resorted to empty rhetoric about "resilience" and "creativity," terms he frequently uses on his provincial tours, even as the country's decline accelerates. In his speech, he also mentioned potential investments in the energy sector and food production, though he failed to provide specifics on timelines or funding, in a context where Cuba relies heavily on international cooperation and imports to sustain its electrical system.

Visit to a Rice Mill: Empty Promises

As part of his visit, Díaz-Canel toured the "17 de Mayo" rice mill, part of the "Ruta Invasora" Grain Agroindustrial Company. Located in northern Camagüey, the facility processes about 30 tons daily, including the so-called popular rice, sourced from local farmers and individual producers.

The tour included an exchange with local residents, during which the leader supposedly showed interest in issues such as healthcare, the maternal-child program, and employment opportunities. However, none of these areas show significant progress. Cuban television increasingly shortens Díaz-Canel's appearances during his tours around Cuban towns. His speeches often ignite heated debates on social media amidst growing social discontent.

Living conditions worsen daily while the government persists in portraying an alternate reality where supposed "positive outcomes" justify the lack of real solutions. The regime remains disconnected from reality, with its management failing on all fronts.
