Large Marijuana Plantation Uncovered in Santiago de Cuba Leads to Multiple Arrests

Wednesday, May 21, 2025 by Ernesto Alvarez

A significant marijuana plantation was dismantled by Cuban authorities in the mountainous region of La Tabla, located in the Tercer Frente municipality of Santiago de Cuba. According to the state-run Facebook page Héroes del Moncada, law enforcement officials from the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) and the Cuban Forest Rangers discovered over 3,000 marijuana plants along with a substantial amount of seeds prepared for cultivation.

Several individuals were apprehended for their involvement in both the illegal cultivation and distribution of the drug. "They fancied themselves as small-scale farmers but were using the land for purposes that severely harm society," criticized the social media post.

While the identities of those arrested have not been disclosed, and their legal fate remains uncertain, authorities emphasized the serious nature of the crime in a nation where drug trafficking and use are prevalent, particularly among youth and teenagers. "Drug use is not an escape but a trap that destroys health, dreams, and the future," warned the officials involved in the operation.

Although an increase in drug consumption is more noticeable in the island's capital, this incident highlights that illegal drug-related activities are also impacting rural areas of the country.
