In a firm and cautionary tone, Tom Homan, recognized as the "Border Czar" during Donald Trump's administration, directed a pointed message to undocumented immigrants residing in the United States. "We are not playing games. There will be consequences. Leave voluntarily," he declared in a recent interview with Fox News. Homan elaborated on the stringent measures being enacted against those who do not voluntarily comply with the White House's new self-deportation initiative.

Self-Deportation or Face Severe Penalties

"If you don't, you will face serious repercussions," Homan emphasized. He reiterated that the government has started to enforce immigration laws that had long been neglected. Among the highlighted actions is the criminal prosecution of individuals who fail to meet registration deadlines or cooperate with immigration authorities following a deportation order. "We will prosecute you, imprison you, and upon release, deport you," he stated firmly.

Homan's rhetoric, filled with warnings of arrests, sanctions, and lifelong bans on re-entering the United States, aims to pressure undocumented immigrants to leave the country on their own accord. "There are consequences, but if you work with us, it makes sense for you and your family," he added.

A New Path with the First Self-Deportation Flight

These statements come in the wake of the CBP Home program launch, an initiative encouraging "voluntary self-deportation" with financial incentives and a promise of potential future reintegration. The first charter flight under this scheme departed from Houston, Texas, on Monday, carrying 64 migrants: 38 Hondurans and 26 Colombians.

Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security, confirmed that participants received $1,000 each, along with logistical support for their return to their home countries. Noem also warned that those who do not join the program "will face fines, arrest, deportation, and a permanent ban from returning." Her message was explicit: "Self-deport now and preserve your chance to return legally and correctly."

Government-Driven "Voluntary" Repatriation

Despite being presented as a "dignified and voluntary" route, the context and language used by authorities paint a more coercive picture. The ramifications for those choosing to stay include not only forced deportation but also legal penalties, imprisonment, and entry bans ranging from five years to a permanent ban from the country. The approach relies on a "collaborate or face punishment" system, contrasting the promise of future immigration benefits with the threat of legal enforcement.

"If you don't open the door, if you don't answer our questions, if you don't attend to process travel documents to your nation... we will pursue you," the border czar asserted.

Support and Incentives from Foreign Governments

Both Honduras and Colombia have organized reintegration programs for returning citizens. Hondurans were welcomed by the "Brother, Sister, Come Home" initiative, which provides an additional $100 bonus, food coupons, and employment assistance. In Colombia, the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare and the Department for Social Prosperity offered social services for reception.

This new chapter in Trump's immigration policy aligns with other restrictive measures, such as the Supreme Court's recent decision to overturn a court order protecting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelan citizens, leaving over 350,000 people in uncertainty. Additionally, the continuation of the CHNV program, which allowed entry for humanitarian reasons for half a million migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, is under judicial review.

Understanding the Impact of U.S. Immigration Policies
