On Monday, a section of the waterway located in Juniper Springs Recreational Area within Ocala National Forest in Florida was temporarily closed due to the presence of a large male alligator exhibiting aggressive behavior towards watercraft. This decision, aimed at ensuring public safety, was shared on the U.S. Forest Service – National Forests in Florida Facebook page.

The closure impacts the stretch from the kayak and canoe launch site to the exit at FL-19 highway. The alligator, measuring approximately 13 to 14 feet in length, has been identified as a "nuisance alligator" by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). This designation is used for alligators posing potential threats to humans or property, typically applied to those over 4 feet long appearing in residential areas, frequently approaching people, or exhibiting aggressive tendencies.

In recent days, the alligator made physical contact with kayaks and canoes, although no injuries have been reported, according to the statement. The forest service clarified that alligator mating season in Florida spans from April to June, followed by nesting from June through August. During these periods, both male and female alligators become particularly territorial, especially near shorelines and nesting sites.

Consequently, the Ocala district forest supervisor and ranger opted to close the waterway to give the alligator space and prevent incidents, thereby safeguarding both the animal and visitors. "Thank you for respecting our wildlife," concluded the message from the U.S. Forest Service.

In a related incident, a 61-year-old woman tragically lost her life after an alligator attack while canoeing with her husband on a lake in central Florida. This unfortunate event occurred Tuesday afternoon in shallow waters near the mouth of Tiger Creek, where it meets Lake Kissimmee, roughly 70 miles south of Orlando.
