Local cultural officials in the Cotorro district have reached out to former model Norka Méndez following her recent plea for help on social media. "She's showing significant improvement. This morning, the new Director of Culture for Cotorro spent considerable time with her and brought much-needed fruit. We feel more at ease now, as the municipal authorities promised to assist her in any way they can," stated art director Luis Lacosta.

Approximately a month ago, the 86-year-old suffered a domestic fall resulting in the loss of her teeth and facial numbness. "Friends of Norka Méndez, I just spoke with her. She is sleeping well, recovering satisfactorily from the accident, and receiving daily nourishment. She asked me to convey her gratitude for your concern," shared another social media post.

A distressing image of Norka's bruised face sparked widespread concern online. Cuban actor Antonio Arroyo called for assistance and set up a bank account for donations to help cover her medical expenses, transportation, and basic necessities: 9224-9598-7933-5477.

Once a paragon of elegance and distinction, Norka's image was captured by the legendary photographer Alberto Korda, who was also her husband and with whom she had two daughters. Together, they became one of the most iconic pairs in Cuban fashion during the 1950s and 60s. Her modeling career took her to Paris, where she walked for renowned designers like Christian Dior and adorned herself with Europe's most prestigious jewelry.

At the height of her career, she shared the stage with luminaries such as Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando. However, today she faces the harsh realities of aging in extreme vulnerability. "I know some neighbors took her to the hospital the day of the accident, and she received the necessary care. But she's alone. I've reached out to a friend of hers in Spain to call her and offer some comfort," Arroyo remarked.

Norka has been honored in recent years, including a tribute by the Cuban Art Factory in 2019 to celebrate her cultural contributions. Additionally, an American university invited her to pose again a few years ago, momentarily reviving her professional brilliance. Yet, these isolated acts starkly contrast with the daily neglect she experiences.

In previous interviews, Norka wryly acknowledged her plight: "I don't feel forgotten; I'm a ghost... Occasionally, my photos appear everywhere."
