Cuban actress and singer Iyaima Martínez Navarro is currently experiencing serious health challenges, a situation that has sparked a wave of support on social media and among her peers in the artistic community. This past Monday, an update was shared on Facebook regarding Iyaima's condition, stating that she remains stable at home, though she is unable to move.
"The outpouring of love and support has significantly strengthened her," said Gavilan on behalf of the actress.
Essential Support and Care
Thanks to the efforts of colleagues, friends, and former students, Iyaima has been able to access proper nutrition and basic medical supplies such as disposable diapers, wet wipes, absorbent sheets, tramadol, and anti-bedsore cream. These resources will sustain her for the coming weeks.
She recently received a new wheelchair and a Fowler bed, provided by the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), which also assists her with transportation for medical appointments.
"We continue to seek support, as she will need ongoing assistance," cautioned Gavilan, urging people to spread the word and contact the support group for those who wish to help.
A Life Devoted to the Arts
Iyaima Martínez was born in Havana on November 16, 1974. A graduate of the National School of Theater Instructors (ENIT), she joined the theater group Punto Azul in 2000 and has had a distinguished career in film, theater, television, and music.
In the film industry, she appeared in movies such as Madrigal, José Martí: The Eye of the Canary, The Wall of Words, and Insumisas. On television, she featured in series like Breaking the Silence and The Last Bolero. She also served as a Voice and Diction instructor at the National School of Theater.
As a singer, she has excelled in genres including trova, bolero, filin, jazz, traditional Cuban songs, son, and guaracha.
A Growing and Sad Reality
In recent weeks, other Cuban artists have also come forward with similar situations. Actor Alejandro Palomino sought support for his wife, actress Nora Elena Rodríguez, who is dealing with a heart condition requiring surgery.
At 91, actor Jorge Losada urgently needed blood donations and assistance in obtaining a wheelchair following medical complications. Meanwhile, actor Samuel Claxton, recovering from a nephrostomy, appealed for help until he passed away two days ago.
These cases, unfortunately, highlight not only the plight of Cuba's artists but a broader reality that affects athletes, retirees, the elderly, and ordinary citizens, who face severe shortages in accessing medical treatments and living conditions. In this context, solidarity becomes the primary recourse in the absence of resources and effective social protection mechanisms.
