Princess Caroline of Hanover, also known as Caroline of Monaco, met with Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel this Saturday during her official visit to the island. The Cuban Presidency's social media shared an image of Díaz-Canel presenting a bouquet of flowers to the royal, stating, "Her Royal Highness, Caroline, Princess of Monaco and Hanover, was received this Saturday afternoon at the Havana Convention Palace by President Díaz-Canel."
Expressing his pleasure at her visit, Díaz-Canel warmly welcomed the princess to Cuba. In response, Princess Caroline expressed her honor at returning to Cuba, a sentiment she held since her first visit a decade ago. "During that time, we established very beautiful ties," she remarked, according to the Presidency's account.
The reception was attended by the regime's Minister of Culture, Alpidio Alonso, and Viengsay Valdés, the principal dancer and director of the National Ballet of Cuba. The princess's trip coincides with the second visit of the Principality of Monaco's dance company to Havana, where they premiered "Core Meu" (My Heart) on Friday.
Jean-Christophe Maillot, the artistic director of Monaco's company, informed the EFE agency that the performance is set against a Mediterranean backdrop and accompanied by the rhythm of the tarantella, a popular dance from southern Italy.
Additionally, on Saturday, Princess Caroline visited Casa Guayasamín in Old Havana, where she donated a portrait painted by Ecuadorian artist Oswaldo Guayasamín. She was seen alongside Viengsay Valdés during her tour of the Casa Guayasamín.
This marks the second visit of the Ballet de Monte-Carlo to Cuba, the previous being in 2015 when they showcased their rendition of Cinderella. On both occasions, Princess Caroline has accompanied the dancers. Founded in 1936, the Ballet de Monte-Carlo was revitalized 40 years ago by Caroline to promote Monaco through dance.
Inspired by her mother, Grace Kelly's love for ballet, Princess Caroline excelled as a ballet apprentice and has been a significant patron of the arts across Europe. She not only founded the Ballet de Monte-Carlo but also presides over the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Monte-Carlo Opera, the Prince Pierre Foundation, the Spring Arts Festival, the Monte-Carlo Garden Club, and the Princess Grace Foundation.
