Pickpockets Target Havana Buses in Coordinated Theft

Sunday, May 18, 2025 by Amelia Soto

In a concerning trend, pickpocket gangs are increasingly targeting passengers on Havana's buses, making public transport a risky affair. Recently, on bus 507 of route P9, an unfortunate passenger fell victim to a theft at 6:43 a.m. on May 5, 2025, when a group of pickpockets stole a cell phone, as reported by the pro-government group Transportación Habana TH.

A video accompanying the report shows passengers urging the driver not to open the door and to contact the police, while the alleged thieves demanded the opposite. "We urge all passengers to keep their mobile devices, headphones, and belongings secure when boarding a bus. Pickpockets are on the prowl, looking for opportunities to cause harm," warned the post, which received numerous comments from disgruntled users.

Many users expressed frustration over the apparent impunity with which these criminals operate across various public transport routes in Havana. "This issue is getting out of hand, and my son was also a victim between Amejerias and Coppelia. The driver wasn't cooperative and opened the doors despite requests not to," lamented Enrique Corría.

Frequent Theft on Havana's Public Transport

User Silvia Fernández shared her own experiences, stating that theft is a common occurrence on route P9. "I've stopped using it altogether. This has been happening for a long time, they even tear your purse to steal items," she said.

Thefts on Cuba's public transport have become another grim reality for island residents. Crowded buses and jostling provide easy cover for thieves to carry out their schemes. In December last year, an incident involving a pickpocket on a Havana bus ended with police intervention. The bus driver halted the vehicle and ordered passengers from the front to disembark after a theft took place there.

Outside the bus, the victim confronted a suspect in the presence of two officers, one of whom began searching the individual. Similarly, in September, two suspected pickpockets were apprehended after attempting to steal a cell phone from a young man on route P3 in 10 de Octubre, Havana. The incident occurred at the Porvenir stop between Fonts and Bouza, where a mother and her son were trying to board the bus.

Thanks to the victim's timely realization, the two criminals were caught and later arrested by officers from patrol car 424, who took them to the Aguilera station in Lawton.
