On Saturday, former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a strong rebuke to retail giant Walmart following their announcement of impending price increases. The company attributed these hikes to the tariffs imposed by the Republican leader on Chinese imports. Through a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump voiced his disapproval of Walmart's decision, accusing them of using tariffs as a mere "excuse" to justify the price surges.

"Walmart should STOP blaming tariffs for the price increases across their stores," Trump asserted. He further commented, "Walmart made BILLIONS of dollars last year, far exceeding expectations." Trump challenged both Walmart and China to "SWALLOW THE TARIFFS" instead of passing any costs onto their valued customers. He concluded his remarks with a defiant tone, stating, "I’ll be watching, and so will their customers!"

The Challenge for Walmart

Trump's critique came after statements made by Walmart's CEO, Douglas McMillon, who warned of mounting challenges due to the high tariffs still levied on Chinese imports. Despite a recent partial reduction—from 145% to 30%—in certain categories, McMillon indicated that the relief was insufficient.

"We are doing everything possible to keep prices low," McMillon emphasized during a public address on Thursday. However, he acknowledged the company's limited flexibility, stating, "We can't absorb all the pressure due to the narrow profit margins in retail." The American retail behemoth, which boasts hundreds of stores nationwide and a significant online presence, has announced that it will begin increasing prices at the end of this month as an unavoidable measure to maintain operational sustainability amidst the additional fiscal burden from tariffs.

Trump's Consistent Narrative

Trump's stance is part of a familiar narrative during his presidency: shifting the economic burden of tariffs onto major corporations or China, rather than acknowledging the domestic impacts of a prolonged trade war.

Previous Clashes with Amazon

This situation with Walmart isn't unprecedented. In April, the White House publicly criticized Amazon after reports suggested the company was considering passing tariff costs onto consumers. However, following the controversy, Amazon chose not to implement the increase, thereby avoiding a direct clash with the administration.

The renewed controversy between Trump and Walmart reignites the debate over who should bear the costs of tariff policies in a globalized economy. On one hand, companies argue that their margins are too tight to absorb the impact without passing it onto consumers. Conversely, figures like Trump argue that corporate giants have the financial capacity to do so.

Despite the uncertain landscape, Walmart is better positioned than many of its rivals. Only 15% of its products are sourced from China, while approximately 60% of its inventory consists of food, most of which is domestically sourced, thereby reducing its direct exposure.
