Cuban actress and singer Iyaima Martínez Navarro is currently dealing with a critical health condition, prompting pleas for assistance from her colleagues on social media. "She is in an extremely dire situation," actor Hamlet Paredes Grau shared on Facebook, mentioning that the artist's father recently had both legs amputated. Paredes urgently called for Tramadol, strong painkillers for adults, and any other possible help. He emphasized, "It's not just any help she needs, but any help is welcome," expressing gratitude to those who have already contributed and providing contacts for coordinating donations both within and outside of Cuba.

A few days earlier, actress Katherine T. Gavilán had posted a similar appeal, asking for "disposable diapers, absorbent sheets, anti-sore cream," and other medical supplies. "If you have any in Havana or are traveling there and can spare a few pounds to send [the supplies], we would greatly appreciate it," she wrote.

Iyaima Martínez Navarro was born in Havana on November 16, 1974. She studied at the National School of Theater Instructors (ENIT) and has been part of the theater group Punto Azul since 2000. Her career spans theater, television, and film, and since 2015, she has also pursued singing in genres like trova, bolero, filin, jazz, song, son, and guaracha. She has appeared in films such as Madrigal, José Martí, el ojo del canario, La pared de las palabras, and Insumisas, as well as in TV series like Rompiendo el silencio and El último bolero. She also taught Voice and Diction at the National Theater School.

Among her accolades are a shared Acting Award at the Vital Theater Festival (2001) and a Special Jury Mention along with the Terry Award (2019) for the monologue Fermentación.

A Widespread Struggle Among Cuban Artists

In recent weeks, other Cuban artists have disclosed similar predicaments. Actor Alejandro Palomino requested support for his wife, actress Nora Elena Rodríguez, who is suffering from a heart condition that requires surgery. Meanwhile, actor Jorge Losada, at 91 years old, has been in urgent need of blood donations and a wheelchair following medical complications. Likewise, actor Samuel Claxton, recovering from a nephrostomy, has been waiting months for medical catheters, relying on public support to get by.

These cases sadly illustrate the struggles not only of Cuba's artistic community but also a broader reality affecting athletes, retirees, the elderly, and everyday citizens who face significant shortages in accessing medical treatments and dignified living conditions. In this context, solidarity becomes the main resource in the absence of effective social protection mechanisms and resources.
