Authorities in Polk County, Florida, have issued a fresh warning regarding the presence of potentially dangerous alligators in Tiger Creek, following two recent attacks within the last couple of months, one of which was fatal. Sheriff Grady Judd and Sergeant Michael Hill shared a warning sign on Facebook that will be installed in the Tiger Creek area, a natural channel linking Tiger Lake with Lake Kissimmee in the eastern part of the county.
This warning follows an investigation into a deadly attack on a woman canoeing in the area, as confirmed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The victim was paddling alone when she was violently attacked by an alligator, resulting in her immediate death. Rescue teams recovered her body, and wildlife specialists captured the alligator responsible.
Moreover, in March 2025, another incident occurred at the same location; however, the victim survived that encounter, according to official reports. “We strongly advise maintaining a safe distance if you spot an alligator. Exercise extreme caution out there,” the Sheriff’s Office stated on social media.
The placement of the warning sign aims to alert residents, fishermen, tourists, and families who frequent the natural surroundings of Tiger Creek. Florida is among the states with the highest alligator population in the U.S. While attacks on humans are rare, encounters are more frequent in areas where residential or recreational activities overlap with the natural habitat of these reptiles.
The FWC and the Sheriff's Department urge the community to avoid approaching or feeding alligators and to refrain from entering waters not marked as safe, especially during the warmer months when these animals are more active and territorial.
